2011 Sustainable Business Awards

The 2011 WasteCap Nebraska Sustainable Business Awards was Thursday the 13th of October at the Country Club of Lincoln. Our key note speaker and workshop leader was Bob Willard, a leader in sustainability planning.   • Recycler of the Year
  • Sustainable Business Award
  • Waste Reduction Recycling and Reuse Award
  • Product Stewardship Award
  • Member of the Year Award

 

Recycler of the Year went to Star City Recycling of Lincoln, for striving to provide their customers with the most comprehensive list of accepted recyclable items in the city. This includes many hard-to-recycle items like batteries, electronics, tires, and even golf balls.

Sustainable Business Award went to RDG Planning and Design of Omaha for their holistic approach to sustainability. The firm’s efforts have not only made their work environment more “green,” but also the home environment of their employees and the built environment of their clients with LEED certified buildings.

Waste Reduction Recycling and Reuse Award, awarded to Becton Dickinson-Pharmaceutical Systems of Columbus for recycling more than 94 percent of its monthly waste. The manufacturing site produces an average of 225 tons of recyclable materials each month. BD-Pharmaceutical Systems has also substantially reduced their consumption of water and energy.

Product Stewardship Award was awarded to Becton Dickinson–Medical of Columbus. In partnership with Waste Management, BD-Medical’s used syringes are being recaptured, sterilized, processed and remanufactured into medical sharps containers marketed under their ecoFinity line.

Member of the Year Award was awarded to Milestone Local Surfaces of Lincoln for their commitment to utilizing locally sourced and recycled materials in their custom countertops. Ninety percent of the material used in their products fits this profile. Milestone Local Surfaces diverted over 30,000 pounds of glass from the landfill this past year, and their new water recirculation system saves approximately 60,000 gallons of water each month. The 2011 Sustainable Business Award plaques were made from Milestone’s product.
