Lincoln Computer Collection a Success
On Wednesday, June 21st, 2006, WasteCap Nebraska held a collection drive for local businesses to recycle electronics and universal wastes. Thanks to funding from The Nebraska Environmental Trust and Waldron, Riggs, and Lloyd, CPAs P.C., WasteCap was able to help local businesses and individuals to recycle their hazardous electronic waste, fluorescent lighting, cell phones and toner cartridges. Over 150 vehicles participated in the event.
Carrie Hakenkamp, Executive Director of WasteCap, announced, "the electronics collection was a great success. It is one of the largest events we have ever hosted." In total, WasteCap collected 31,698 pounds of universal waste, including 368 computer monitors and nearly 1,000 fluorescent light tubes. On average, each vehicle participating in the collection brought 191 pounds of electronics and other wastes to be recycled. The event diverted approximately 4900 pounds of plastic, 7,000 pounds of leaded glass, and 9700 pounds of metal from the landfill.
If you missed the June 21st collection and need to properly manage electronics or other universal wastes, please contact Sue Ellen Pegg, 436-2383, to find out about future WasteCap collection events or to learn about other electronics recycling opportunities.
WasteCap would like to thank all the business that participated and give special thanks to our volunteers and to WasteCap member The Tool House for donating work gloves for the event.

Dell Pledges Corporate Responsibility
On June 28th, Dell became the latest computer company to step up recycling efforts by unveiling a free computer take-back program. Chairman Michael Dell explained that the program would allow customers anywhere in the world to recycle their old Dell computers free of charge. "We don’t believe consumers should have to pay for responsible retirement of used electronic products," Dell said. Pursuant to this belief, Dell has agreed to take back any old Dell, even if the consumer isn’t buying a new one.
Dell went on to encourage accountability among electronics producers, and expressed a belief that successful electronics recycling would stem from responsible corporate action. "We think it's a far better option for the market ultimately to work its magic and for companies to compete with each other to get better at doing this," Dell said. Dell’s spirit of competition seems to be catching; Apple and HP have also recent announced similar take-back services.

ReCellular to help recycle phones in Venezuela
From Waste News — Cell phone recycler ReCellular Inc. has helped launch Venezuela's first mobile phone recycling program. The Dexter, Michigan-based firm has partnered with national charity Asociacion Venezolana de Educacion Catolica and wireless phone operator Movilnet, which will support the program through drop-off collection points at its stores.
Venezuela reportedly has 13.6 million wireless subscribers. The RECICL@CEL recycling program will offer more than 1,300 drop-off locations throughout the country. Phones collected through the program will be refurbished or recycled.
ReCellular has collected and resold more than 15 million handsets, many of them in South American markets. The company is committed to establishing recycling programs in every market in which it sells refurbished phones, said Charles Newman, ReCellular president and CEO.
HP Expands Global Recycling Program
On June 27th, HP announced the expansion of its product return and recycling program to reach more customers and create new ways for people to discard used or unwanted electronic equipment in a convenient and environmentally responsible manner.
The company will host a series of product collection events in the United States throughout the summer to raise awareness and increase the rate of electronics recycling among consumers. The collection events, which will accept a range of products from any manufacturer, will be held from June through September in Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Mexico and Oregon.
HP is on target to meet its global goal to recycle 1 billion pounds of hardware and HP print cartridges by the end of 2007. HP’s recycling program operates globally in more than 40 countries, regions and territories and seeks to reduce the environmental impact of IT products, minimize waste going to landfills and help customers conveniently discard products in an environmentally sound fashion.

On June 29, Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality Director Mike Linder announced the awarding of $1,550,998 in grants for waste reduction and recycling projects.
