WasteCap Nebraska Presents Check to Lincoln Action Program
WasteCap Nebraska presented a donation to the Lincoln Action Program, using the proceeds from Shred Day 2007. Shred Day, which was held in April, was an event to accept old documents for free shredding and recycling. Each of the three shred sites, Midland Recycling, Shredding Solutions, and Recycling Enterprises, accepted in-kind donations, and collected 12,924 pounds of shredded materials, serving 239 cars. The Lincoln Action Program, who received the in-kind donations, is an electronics recycling and refurbishing corporation, which also provides equipment and technical assistance to build computer learning stations throughout the community. For more information about the Lincoln Action Program, or to make a donation, visit their website. For more information on Shred Day, or information on shredding services, please contact Kari Rohren at [email protected].

Two States Join in E-Waste Legislation
Both Maine and North Carolina have joined other states in administrating e-waste legislation. Maine signed into law a legislation that requires all cellular phone retailers to have a system that accepts used and spent phones for reuse, recycling, and proper disposal purposes. North Carolina signed a landfill bill, making them the 9th state to create a recovery system for scrap electronics.

New Tool Assesses Environmental Performance
Researchers at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln have developed a software tool to assess the greenhouse gas mitigation and energy efficiency of corn-based ethanol plants. The software evaluates emissions, yield, and efficiency for individual biofuel production systems. “Environmental and economic expectations are high for biofuel production. Determining how well individual plants measure up will be critical to the industry's long-term success and sustainability”, said Ken Cassman, UNL agronomist and director for the Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences. The initial version of the new software is available free on the Biofuel Energy Systems Stimulator (BESS) website. For the full story on the BESS software, please click on the source link below.

Research Suggests Link Between Pollution and Heart Disease
Recent research shows that when exposed to common air pollutants, persons with high cholesterol are more susceptible to heart disease. This study is the first to show that particles in the air may activate certain genes that cause heart attacks and strokes. The scientists reported that once the particles entered the body’s circulatory system and lungs they react with fats causing an inflammation. Similar studies have shown links between lung inflammation and pollution particles, suggesting links to lung cancer, asthma attacks, and DNA damage. The particles mentioned in the study are most concentrated near freeways and areas with high concentration of trucks using diesel gasoline.
