Fluorescent Lights & CFLs
Fluorescent, high-pressure sodium, mercury vapor, metal halide and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are often preferred over incandescent lamps because they use significantly less energy. However, all of these lamps contain mercury, a potent neurotoxin. Safe disposal of mercury-containing lamps is essential in preventing environmental contamination and avoiding health side-effects of mercury exposure in humans and animals.
When recycled properly nearly 100% of all lamp components can be reused. A recycling charge is likely to be imposed to cover the cost of processing. The service charge, quantity of lamps, and pick-up schedule can be determined cooperatively with your chosen recycling provider. WasteCap Nebraska business members qualify for discounts on lamp recycling.
Households and some businesses can take advantage of a growing network of fluorescent lamp collection sites across Nebraska. Many public libraries and hardware stores have already signed on to participate in this WasteCap Nebraska program, named "Another Bright Idea." Some sites have the capacity to accept quantities generated by businesses. To find out where to go and what type of lamps are accepted visit www.anotherbrightidea.info.
